Seventh Element

“Today is your day, your mountain is waiting. So get on your way.”
― Dr. Seuss

Try to do everything in the world with a mind that lets go. If you let go a little, you will have a little peace. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace. If you let go completely, you will know complete peace and freedom. Your struggles with the world will have come to an end.

Ajahn Chah

ABOUT SEVENTH ELEMENT

Right mindfulness is the Seventh Element of the Noble Eightfold Path, one of the Buddha’s principal teachings to relieve suffering. Mindfulness training is a philosophy of living fully and completely by encouraging us to cultivate the skills to remain non-reactive no matter what we experience. Living in this way doesn’t change what happens in our life, but it changes our relationship to it. It allows us to see clearly and remain equanimous, as if we were a mountain and our experiences were clouds. The mountain remains still as it observes the thunderstorms, rainbows and sunshine. Mindfulness training can affect all aspects of our lives, such as relationships, career, diet, or personal growth. Seventh Element, founded by Priscilla Szneke, teaches these skills in a variety of formats and utilizes the cushion, yoga and lecture/discussion to impart these skills in a way that is accessible to all participants. We have classes for individuals, groups, and corporations. Contact Priscilla Szneke at Seventh Element to learn how to incorporate these techniques into your daily life. We are based in Jamestown, RI, in Newport County.

To meditate does not mean to fight with a problem.
To meditate means to observe.
Your smile proves it.
It proves that you are being gentle with yourself,
that the sun of awareness is shining in you,
that you have control of your situation.
You are yourself, and you have
acquired some peace.

For leadership positions, emotional intelligence is more important than cognitive intelligence.

“We hurry through the so-called boring things in order to attend to that which we deem more important, interesting. Perhaps the final freedom will be recognition that everything in every moment is essential and that nothing at all is important.”

Helen M. Luke

MEDITATION OPPORTUNITIES

All meditation techniques are grounded in concentration practice. Mindfulness meditation (also known as Insight or Vipassana meditation) is a self-transformative technique that uses self-observation. Opportunities to cultivate both concentration and mindfulness are available, as well as meditations to develop the virtues of kindness, compassion, patience and equanimity.

MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS REDUCTION (MBSR)

MBSR is an 8-week educational program that provides effective tools for establishing a daily mindfulness practice leading to a more healthy, rewarding and balanced lifestyle. Mindfulness has been found to reduce stress associated with medical conditions, such as chronic pain and heart disease as well as anxiety and depression. Jon Kabat-Zinn describes mindfulness as “paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally, to the unfolding of experience moment to moment.”

Using this present moment awareness, deep relaxation, and gentle movement we observe our perceptions of life. Then we can create space to consciously choose how we will respond to our daily stressors rather than using our habitual patterns to react. Using mindfulness we cultivate a sense of well-being, confidence and creativity while developing renewed energy.

MINDFULNESS-BASED EATING AWARENESS TRAINING (MB-EAT)

Mindfulness-Based Eating Awareness Training (MB-EAT), developed by Dr. Jean Kristeller, uses mindfulness and meditation for problematic eating behavior. MB-EAT is informed by Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program and the research on meditation, food intake regulation, obesity and eating disorders. This course is a highly experiential program emphasizing the foundational nature of mindfulness practice and the practical application of it in helping people change their relationship to food and eating, including overeating, binge eating and weight management.
